This Bunnahabhain Canasta 2023 Feis Ile edition has been fully matured in rare William and Humbert Canasta sherry casks. These casks once held a blend of Oloroso (75%) and Pedro Ximenez (25%) sherries. Using these Canasta casks to mature our whisky has given us the best of both worlds with layers of flavour; Oloroso sherry is spicy, whereas the Pedro Ximenez is a lot sweeter. A classic Bunnahabhain dram, this Limited Edition is unpeated and sherried and, like all our whiskies, no added colour and non-chillfiltered.
Feis ile is always a great time where Islay's distilleries release new beauties. This 2023, Bunnahabhain made two releases; one a Manzanilla Cask, a more expensive and fancy one; and this Bunnahabhain Canasta Cask matured. Canasta is the Spanish word for "basket", which has nothing to do here, since Canasta apparently is also a type of Oloroso Sherry. Well, this one has been bottled at a beautiful 51.2%abv, with a lovely tawny color.
On the nose, this is quite impressive. Orange peel, a tangerine caramel, sawdust and white chocolate. Apple peel, crushed almonds. It is freaking aromatic! After a first sip, it became creamy beautiful on the nose. It smells like a "brigadeiro" sweet. The citrus here is out of this world. Perfect score on the nose. On the palate, it is great, with a starting white chocolate; impalpable sugar and orange acidity. On the second sip, I got this marvelous sugary note with milk. The after taste was good. Sawdust; hay. Maybe a little oaky.
Overall, this is a very enjoyable single malt for a very affordable price. I truly believe Bunnhabhain did a great job on this one and if I ever cross paths with this one again, I will not hesitate to buy it once more. A proper dram, my score for it is 91 over 100.

Bunnahabhain has a stunning coastal location by the Sound of Islay to the north east of the island. In 1881 William Robertson founded Bunnahabhain along with the brothers William and James Greenless. The Islay Distillers Company Ltd was then merged with William Grant & Co in 1887 to form Highland Distilleries Company Limited. After one take over and another sale this popular distillery is now owned by Distell International Ltd. Bunnahabhain is the first distillery on Islay to boast a net zero production output. A new visitors centre has also been opened there. The core range consists of the 12, 18 and 25 year olds newly packaged as well as a 40 year old. Demand for their peated whisky has grown considerably in recent years so in 2017 the peated Striuireadair was released quickly follow by the Toiteach a Dha in 2018. There have also been numerous independent bottlings and in 2021 a cask strength 12 year old single malt was released.

Nose: Classic sherried nose; sweet and caramelised fruits, honey roasted nuts, waves of cinnamon and clove with a hint of rancio
Palate: Maple syrup leads with creamy vanilla, dried figs, poached pears and a sprinkle of cocoa. A gentle twist of orange appears in the background
Finish: Long and sweet with notes of brown sugar, red apples and vanilla custard
