Convalmore Distillery

Convalmore a lost Speyside distillery in Dufftown and was founded in 1893 by Peter Dawson with production starting a year later. The distillery was bought in 1904 by whisky merchants W.P Lowrie & Co. Ownership was short lived and Convalmore was taken over by the well know James Buchanan. Some of his time with Convalmore was spent assessing the use of continuous stills in order to find a cheaper way of making spirit. He discovered irregular maturation levels so ceased to use these stills in 1916. Then much later in 1925 his company was merged with the larger Distillers Company Ltd. The distillery was shut down in 1985 and in 1990 bought by William Grant & Sons. Although empty the buildings still stand today and malt from near by distilleries is matured in its warehouses. The single malt from Convalmore is now rare. There have been a small number of releases and the independent bottlers have also brought its whisky to market.
