The older sibling to The Balvenie’s most popular malt, The Balvenie Doublewood 17 is matured in 2 cask types – traditional American oak and European oak
The Balvanie DoubleWood acquires its complex yet rich and smooth taste from its maturation in two different types of oak cask, carefully selected by our Expert Malt Master, David Stewart.
The Balvenie Distillery remains totally dedicated to the Traditions, Care and Craftsmanship of malt whisky making and has been owned and managed by the same Independent family company for five generations.
Malt Masters have a very important role in the whisky making process, not only nosing and tasting whisky but also using intuition and expertise to ensure the spirit matures into fine single malt. As The Balvenie Malt Master, David Stewart is also guardian of The Rare Crafts required to preserve the distinctive, honeyed taste of The Balvenie.
The Balvenie DoubleWood derives its name from the fact that is spends its maturation period in two distinct types of cask. David Stewart was one of the first to produce single malt Scotch whisky using this method and this seventeen year old expression of DoubleWood shows the effect of longer maturation in a Traditional Whisky Oak Cask, followed by a shorter, expertly judged period spent in a European Oak Sherry Cask.
This Final Stage of maturation in the sherry casks can take anything between a few months and a year, so the whisky is nosed regularly to ensure the process is halted at precisely the right moment.
From this Distillery comes The Balvenie DoubleWood Aged 17 Years characterised by rich vanilla oak, honey and layers of sweet spices
Unlike most distilleries, The Balvenie still uses traditional methods in the productions of their whisky.
The barley used is grown by the distillery on their land, and the water used is from the pure natural springs in the Conval Hills. The Balvenie Distillery is the only Speyside Distillery to have its own floor maltings, thus reinforcing its links with traditional methods of Scotch Whisky production.
The Balvenie employ their own coppersmith to tend to the stills and coopers to look after the casks, so The Balvenie employees have the wisdom of experience when making the whisky.
The Balvenie is one of the worlds most loved Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. A multi-award winning distillery it is famous for being the most hand crafted Single Malt Whisky in Scotland. Characterised by a gentle honey sweetness and flavour complexity, The Balvenie is the last distillery to retain all the traditional crafts of whisky production. From barley farmed at Balvenie Mains to casks maintained by our own coopers, every element of the production process is valued for the unique qualities it brings to the finished Single Malt Whisky.
