The scent of fresh wood filled the room with cricket bats freshly coated with linseed oil and varnish on the pavilion. A hot and spicy character tingled the tongue as we sipped on home-made plum spirit and chewed on soft fudge and fruit jelly sweets. After a dash of water, we were bowling toffee apples at a fast pace towards the willow of cricket stumps. As the apples bounced, they kicked up earthy elements reminiscent of rhubarb but served with custard and cinnamon spice. After the match was over, we sat down with blackcurrant tarts as the sun baked down and the smell of dry wood was still thick in the air.
