Part of our maturation warehouse series, this 12 year old release has been finishing in an Oloroso Hogshead at Bunnahabhain since June 2014.  A really interesting dram which showcases how well Bunnahabhain spirit matures in sherry casks, with notes of paprika spice, stewed fruits, tropical flavours and nuts.
The maturation warehouse is one of our newest visitor experiences at the distillery, exploring in depth, the maturation process and the effect a sherry cask has on our unpeated spirit at different ages.
First matured in a refill sherry butt, this whisky was then transferred to a first fill Oloroso sherry hogshead at the distillery in June 2014.  It has continued to mature in our coastal warehouse until bottled by the team to share with you here.

The result is a complex, rich dram with a sweet and fruity nose, an oily mouthfeel with a soft, lightly spiced aftertaste with a clean, dry finish.

Official Tasting Notes

NOSE

Liquorice, lime/citrus notes, tropical fruits – papaya, mango, pineapple, Bouganvillea, toffee/caramel, icing sugar, light, tropical sunset

PALATE

Paprika spice which mellows out quite quickly, cava root, ginseng, creamy butterscotch, nuts, oily mouthfeel which coats the tongue, custard dessert

FINISH

A soft aftertaste, with no lingering heavy influence. Spice but not sharp, stewed fruits – plums, orange, dates, smooth delicate flavours including tropical palm trees and coconut oil – better than a pina colada! Nutty and earthy with a clean, dry finish.

Bunnahabhain has a stunning coastal location by the Sound of Islay to the north east of the island. In 1881 William Robertson founded Bunnahabhain along with the brothers William and James Greenless. The Islay Distillers Company Ltd was then merged with William Grant & Co in 1887 to form Highland Distilleries Company Limited. After one take over and another sale this popular distillery is now owned by Distell International Ltd. Bunnahabhain is the first distillery on Islay to boast a net zero production output. A new visitors centre has also been opened there. The core range consists of the 12, 18 and 25 year olds newly packaged as well as a 40 year old. Demand for their peated whisky has grown considerably in recent years so in 2017 the peated Striuireadair was released quickly follow by the Toiteach a Dha in 2018. There have also been numerous independent bottlings and in 2021 a cask strength 12 year old single malt was released.
