The Speyside Glenlivet distillery is situated near Ballindalloch in Morayshire. It has a long history and was one of the first distilleries to be licensed. The founder, George Smith who bought Minmore farm in 1858 used the distilling equipment from his previous ventures to build The Glenlivet distillery. Whisky from his first distillery at Upper Drumin had already been marketed as Glenlivet and word had spread just how good this single malt was. In the early days the whisky produced was fruity and light unlike the common heavy style of the time. Its reputation had reached well beyond Scotland and even Charles Dickens had written to his friends of its quality.
Glenlivet is now owned by Chivas Brothers {Pernod Ricard} Recent expansion has given the distillery a huge capacity at 21 million litres making it one of the biggest in Scotland.
As you would expect there are a wide variety of releases. The Founder’s Reserve, Captain’s Reserve, Caribbean Reserve, 12, 15 and French oak Reserve, plus the 18 year are all part of the core range.
