About Royal Lochnagar Whisky
The first distillery was founded by James Robertson in 1823 on the banks of the river Dee in the Highlands whisky region. After a two fires a third distillery named ‘New’ Lochnagar was built in 1845 by John Begg. The distillery is situated in the Abergeldie Estate very close to Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire. New Lochnager was visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848 and was subsequently issued a royal warrant. Shortly after the visit the distillery was named Royal Lochnagar. The distillery was issued a further three royal warrants, the most recent being bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2021. Royal Lochnagar is a picturesque farm-yard style distillery that has a pagoda roof, two small stills and is one of a few distilleries to use cast iron worm tubs. In the core range there is the 12 year old and Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve is made up of a vatting of casks that are normally 18 to 20 years old. In 2019 a House Baratheon bottling was released as part of the popular Game of Thrones Series.
