The Lagavulin 25 Year Old 200th Anniversary Release 2016 is amazing dram to savour and an amazing bottle to have in your collection.
2016 is the 200th anniversary of the founding of Lagavulin, and this bottle has been released in honour of the managers who have made the distillery what it is today. Aged for 25 years in sherry casks, it's a big and rich dram, with layers of smoke and dried fruit, all wrapped up in a bottle listing the name of each of the distillery managers.
This is a worldwide production of just 8,000 bottles with each bottle having an individual number and matching box. This bottle would make a very memorable gift for a very special whisky fan.
Lagavulin can be found to the south of the beautiful island is Islay in the village of the same name. It was founded in 1816 by John Johnston who built two distilleries at the same site. After Johnston’s passing in 1836 the two distilleries were merged forming Lagavulin which was then acquired by Alexander Graham a wine and spirits merchant. The distillery is now owned by industry giant’s Diageo it is well know for its heavily-peated single malt whisky. Lagavulin whisky is popular worldwide and a favourite of many whisky fans for its smoky coastal influences. The distilled spirit is predominately matured in ex-bourbon casks which helps in highlighting these smoky flavours. There are roughly 5000 casks maturing on-site, the new production is taken to be aged on the mainland. Lagavulin was on of six whiskies to be showcased in Diageo’s ‘Classic Malts of Scotland’ selection which helped to boost the popularity of the brand.

Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Profound, complex and dry overall. Rich yet elusive, it really takes time to open up, first offering liquid dried fruits; figs, dates or prunes and a trace of treacle toffee.
Palate: A voluptuous, oily texture, with a bitter-sweet and gingery, slightly drying start. Intense, with masses of charred wood, oak-smoked meats, honey, burnt treacle tart and ash.
Finish: Long, smooth, sweetly honeyed and elegant, with slowly rising fragrant wood smoke, ash, salt and a subtle, chilli like heat; followed by cooling eucalyptus.
