“Every year I look forward to creating our Fèis Ìle expressions. We’re always pushing the boundaries at Bruichladdich Distillery, but these small batch bottlings are a chance to showcase some more unusual things – which is exactly what we’ve done with Bruichladdich Rock’ndaal 03.1

“This year’s Bruichladdich expression uses a unique combination of different casks. They each have a distinctive character and are varied in terms of flavour - but work exceptionally well together when combined.

“I used an equal mix of Sauternes casks and dessert wine casks from Austria, adding sweetness and ripe orchard fruits which amplify our classic Bruichladdich house style. I’ve always had my eye on the ex-brandy casks which we’ve used, which add another layer of depth and flavour as these previously held Predro Ximenez Sherry. These casks bring subtle hints of nutmeg and ginger, as well as dried apricot and stoned fruits.

“This expression is different to anything else we’ve ever released, but I hope people enjoy it as much as I do.”

Official Tasting Notes

Colour - Pale Gold

Nose - Crème brulee immediately opens on the nose, with sharp lemon rind cutting through the creamy vanilla custard. Malt biscuit, toasted oak, hazelnut, and praline follow, balanced with hints of ripe pear, apricot, and honey.

Palate - Marzipan and honey join a mix of dried fruit, with apricot, figs and dried mango bringing a hint of sweetness. A subtle minerality coats the palate, nodding to the single malt whisky’s all Islay maturation. This salty tang is balanced with a hint of nutmeg and peaches in syrup.

Finish - Sweet floral notes come to the fore, with a gentle bouquet of primrose and Turkish delight followed by marzipan and Scottish tablet.

The Bruichladdich distillery was constructed on the isle of Islay off the west coast of Scotland in 1881 by Barnett Harvey. Then in 1886 Bruichladdich Distillery Company Ltd was founded. The site lies to the south west of the island and is one of nine working distilleries there. There have been numerous owners over the years and a time of consistency when Invergordon Distillers took over in 1968. In 1993 Whyte & Mackay bought Invergordon Distillers and the distillery was mothballed in 1995. Bruichladdich was then sold to Murray McDavid in 2000. Since 2001 when production started again the philosophy was to push the boundaries of the norm for whisky making. The distillery has become renowned for its innovation and willingness to experiment. There are three main lines produced, unpeated Bruichladdich, heavily peated Port Charlotte and ultra heavily peated Octomore. Not forgetting the botanist gin also distilled on site. The distillery has been very busy over the past twenty years producing new releases, batches and vintages of these great diverse whiskies.
