About Kilkerran Whisky
Kilkerran is the name of whisky produced at the Glengyle distillery situated in the town of Cambletown on the stunning Kintyre Peninsula, West Scotland. Killerran is a derivative of the name ’Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain’ in Gaelic which was the early settlement where Campbeltown is now situated. It was the same site where Saint Kieran had his religious cell. The Glengyle name is already used for vatted malt elsewhere so the decision was taken to call the whisky brand Kilkerran.
The distillery is owned by Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd and is one of only three distilleries that make up the Cambeltown whisky region. Glengyle was closed in 1925 and in 2000 the distillery was acquired by the owners of the neighbouring Springbank distillery. It was rebuilt and the first distillation took place in 2004.
Glengyle and Springbank have close links as they share the same operations employees. The style of whisky produced is slightly smoky having fruity, honey and butterscotch characteristics. The whisky is predominately aged in a marriage of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. In 2007 a limited release 3 year old was available there after, annually from 2009 to 2015 inclusive Kilkerran ‘Work in progress’ was released. The initial core 12 year old became available in 2016. There is now also a very heavily peated Kilkerran which takes up only a small part of the main production.
