Grandson Derek is the third and final release in The McLeans Collection from Oban distillery. The collection celebrates three generations of distillers from the McLean family.
This limited edition single malt showcases Oban’s signature coastal Highland style with extra layers of flavour from a dual cask finish.
Matured initially in oak, the whisky was then finished in 2nd fill ex-Pinot Noir casks and ex-Sangiovese wine casks, imparting layers of red fruit richness and spice while preserving Oban’s classic maritime complexity. Bottled at a robust 52.3% abv.
Designed for whisky enthusiasts who appreciate depth and craftsmanship.

Aroma: Mellow and nose-drying. The initial top notes are fruity and faintly floral, suggesting hyacinths, but are soon supplanted by maritime scents of salt crystal and sea breeze, with a suggestion of fresh linen. These aromas drift away if a drop of water is added.
Palate: A creamy-smooth texture leads to a taste that is quite sweet initially. After the mild nose, it is surprisingly powerful, as a hot, peppery spiciness with an attractive salty edge roars through the sweetness. It's approachable neat, as the spicy intensity remains part of the flavour without dominating it, yet more easy-going with water, which maintains the sweet-spicy balance while reducing the sheer power of the spiciness.
Body: Medium to full.
Finish: Long, hot n’ spicy and lightly drying, the peppery heat of the spice still clear.
Oban distillery was founded in 1793 by John and Hugh Stevenson. The buildings are situated in the middle of the bustling seaside town of Oban on the west coast of Scotland. The distillery is in a great location and attracts a large number of visitors each year. Changing hands numerous times it is now currently owned by whisky industry giant’s Diageo. All the whisky produced is used for releasing single malt with none for blending. The distillery has long fermentation times with six mashes per week giving the final whisky a fruity style. Quite unusually a stainless steel worm tub is used as part of the production method. The brand is very popular and in the core range there’s the 14 year old Little Bay and Distiller’s Edition fino sherry finish. There are various limited editions and Oban whisky is also available as part of the owners yearly Special Releases.
