Nose: The initial nose gave us summer fragrances of sweet peas, chamomile lawns and hedgerows, and the fruity zing of tangerines, pink grapefruit and fino sherry. The reduced nose evoked honeycomb, buttery pastries, peach-flavoured ice tea and freshly cut pine.
Palate: The palate maintained creative tension between sweet, creamy characteristics (white chocolate, blancmange, nougat and pears in custard) and the slightly bitterer aspects of almonds, bitter lemon and gooseberry, before a dry finish of liquorice and oak. On the palate, the nutty, creamy elements both increased, delivering banana split with crushed nuts, tutti frutti ice cream and strawberry yoghurt, with traces of pickled ginger and wasabi on the finish.
Tamdhu is a Speyside distillery situated in the village of Knockando in the historic county of Banffshire, Scotland. It was founded in 1896 by Tamdhu Distillery Company. The name Tamdhu derives from the Gaelic for ‘little dark hill’. For many years the whisky produced was mainly used in blends until 2011 when the distillery was sold to Ian Macleod Distillers. Since then there has been a shift towards producing Tamdhu as a single malt. The spirit made for their whisky is exclusively matured in the finest sherry casks, both first and second fill. The new owners were inspired by the founders passion for ageing whisky in these types of casks. In 2018 a Tamdhu 12 year old was proudly released that went on to win Gold in the 2022 World Spirits Competition. The family-owned firm also won Distiller of the Year at Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky Awards 2018.
